Family Hiking through Bolsa Chica Beach Stumbles Upon Dead Body

A local family’s camping trip took a disturbing turn this weekend when they found a dead body near a popular campground in Huntington Beach.

According to The Orange County Register, Sean Franco and his daughters were staying at the Bolsa Chica State Beach campground when they decided to venture out to the Tidal Inlet Channel in hopes of finding some crabs.

Franco and his family, along with a few of Franco’s friends, hiked along the beach to a rock-filled area when one member of the group made a startling discovery.

“We’re on one side with the kids when all of a sudden my buddy said, ‘Get the kids out of here!'” Franco recalled.

Without hesitation, Franco ushered his young daughters away from the rocks. He then turned to his friend to ask what happened.

“Dude, we found a body,” Franco’s friend said.

A deceased man was wedged between two rocks with his head and chest submerged beneath the water’s surface. Franco and his friends immediately contacted police, but the memory of seeing the dead body for the first time still remains in their minds.

“His foot was white as paper,” Franco said. “It looks like he slid and his foot got caught in the rocks, and he drowned because he was upside down underwater.”

Hiking is one of the most popular activities for campers, and unfortunately, stumbling upon dead bodies in remote parts of nature is not unheard of. An official cause of death for the man has not yet been determined, though authorities believe that it was nothing more than a freak accident.

“There was no obvious foul play,” said Kevin Pearsall, public safety superintendent for California State Parks in Orange County. “He obviously drowned.”

As local news affiliate ABC 7 reported, this is not the only unnerving story to come out of Bolsa Chica State Beach in recent months. In early March, part of the beach was closed after a surfer was knocked off his surfboard by a shark. The sighting resulted in about one mile of water being closed for the remainder of the weekend.

As for Franco’s harrowing discovery, the deceased man’s identity is still a mystery. Pearsall said that the man had a small frame and was wearing just one athletic shoe when he was found.

“He was wearing an Under Armour shirt and a jacket,” Franco said. “He was dressed pretty nice. He had his khaki pants rolled up like he was walking on the rocks.”

Authorities believe he may be a vagrant, but this has not been confirmed. Anyone with information on the identity of this man is encouraged to contact police as soon as possible.
